[MUSIC PLAYING] Frequently, my back
pain was so severe, and it was difficult
to lie down. It was difficult to get up. So I think over
the years, the pain began to exacerbate before I
began to do anything about it. Tai Chi was a mystical
and strange subject. And it was hard for me to
envision it being of help. In real time, Tai Chi is
actually a martial arts. But in the flow, it is the
healing properties of it that affect your body and give
it a great deal of fluidity and reduce the pain levels. I served in Vietnam,
frontline infantry. I was engaged in carrying
substantial weight on my back and in other parts of the body. But the combat
didn’t last forever. So you come back home. And all of a sudden, you start
to realize this doesn’t work, and that doesn’t work,
and something hurts. And then as a result of
being clean and sober, I wanted to have therapies or
fixes for whatever ailed me that did not include pills or
opiates that would possibly ignite a larger problem
in my entire life. [PEOPLE TALKING IN BACKGROUD] What makes this VA center
different than other VAs is the strong foundation
and dedication that we’ve had to
integrative help and healing. Some of the
complementary integrative approaches that we’re offering
include Tai Chi, yoga, acupuncture, comfort massage,
hand and foot massage. A lot of veterans are seeking
non-opioid approaches, for example. These tools are
very, very effective and don’t have all the
side effects of medication. Traditionally, these
non-drug therapies have been considered
alternative or complementary to mainstream treatment. But what research is showing
is that they actually work just as well, if not better
than conventional care with far less risk. The using of these
non-drug therapies relieves my back
pain, some of them only for a couple of hours, some
of them for a couple of days. But because I use them
daily and frequently, I feel good every day. Mr. Sells reports that a
lot of his pain is reduced. And more than that, I
think his overall sense of well-being and life
satisfaction has improved. I just make sure I
continue these therapies so I can continue to live the
life that I am living today. I’m very grateful. [MUSIC PLAYING]

  2. Tai Chi has been around since the 19th century, practiced by like 1 billion people daily, and this is news to CR? Next headline, Billy Blanks discovers martials arts and makes lots of money promoting Tae Bo.

  3. Why are you promoting medical advice with anecdotal evidence, consumer reports? Acupuncture and alternative medicines are you serious?
