(lullaby music) – I’m Ella Dove and this
is What the Wellness, the show where I try out weird wellness experiences and treatments to find out what’s weird and
what’s actually worth it. Today, I’m trying out a very unique wellness experience at Goku. Goku is a spa originally from
Japan with four locations and a wait list with 480,000 people on it. Today, I’ll be getting a Zeccho treatment, which is a dry massage
that’s supposed to help me fall asleep. They say the benefits will take me out of this beautiful space and
into my sleepy-time routine. The CDC says that over 35% of Americans are not getting enough sleep. Enough sleep is quantified as
at least seven hours a night. I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely not getting seven hours every night. I’m not a napper, I don’t like napping. I’m a bad napper, it’s
hard for me to fall asleep, and I find that I typically
wake up in kind of a bad, groggy mood, like the world is ending, but maybe if I have someone
gently massaging me to sleep in a space that is designated for napping, I’ll wake up feeling refreshed and take some of what I experience today into my own bed when
I go to sleep tonight. (record scratches) Hi, this is a better-rested
Ella from the future. So, here’s what was going
on during the massage. I got to talk to the creator of Goko, Atsumi Kaneda, who told
me all about the treatment and how it started. The massage she created focused on relieving tension in your head and neck using techniques she learned from doctors, acupuncturists, and massage therapists. (upbeat music) – Hi.
– Hi. – So, I’m going to start your treatment. – Perfect, thank you. So, I don’t know how long it’s going to take me to fall asleep. Takes some people five minutes,
some people ten minutes. Cozy. (lullaby music) Thank you. – And I’ll recline this chair.
– Okay, perfect. (lullaby music) When I went into my appointment, my therapist walked me through
some breathing techniques that really got me into a chill state. (lullaby music) Then they began massaging
the muscles in my head. It felt kinda like they were
using acupressure points to release tension. Atsumi said that once all the muscles in your head are relaxed, clients almost always fall asleep. (lullaby music) – Time to get up. – Okay. Good morning, I don’t even
know if I was asleep or not. My hands started to get really relaxed, and my feet started to get really relaxed, and like, the relaxation
worked its way through my body, and I would have these
moments where I’d be like, am I sleeping or am I awake? And then I’d be like, I guess I’m awake, it was very nice. If somebody could do that
to me every single night as I went to bed, I think that
would really be the dream. But like, it was just
like, the most peaceful little drift off to sleep
